My Son Said I “Owed” Him Free Childcare After I Retired — So I Reminded Him of the Truth

I had worked for more than four decades, and at 67, I was finally ready to retire.
I imagined slow mornings, gardening, visiting friends, and spending time with my grandchildren when I wanted to.
Then my daughter-in-law called.
“Perfect timing,” she said. “Now you can keep the kids Monday through Friday.”
I laughed because I thought she was joking.
She wasn’t.
I explained that I loved the children, but retirement didn’t mean I had signed up to become their unpaid full-time babysitter.
She became cold and hung up.
A few hours later, my son texted me.

“You owe us. Do you remember how much we helped you after your surgery?”
I couldn’t believe it.
Yes, they had helped me.
For six days.
But over the years, I had also watched their children countless weekends, paid for summer camps, helped with school expenses, and even covered several months of their mortgage when my son lost his job.
I called him.
“I remember everything,” I said. “That’s exactly why keeping score is such a bad idea.”
He went quiet.
I told him I would gladly babysit sometimes.
But five days a week was a job, not a favor.
A week later, they apologized.
We worked out one afternoon each week.
That felt like being Grandma.
Not unpaid staff.
