A Woman Handed Me a Baby at My Husband’s Funeral — Then I Read the Letter He Left Behind

My husband Patrick died suddenly in a car accident.
At the funeral, I barely remember who spoke to me. I was exhausted, numb, and still expecting him to walk through the door somehow.
Then I noticed a woman standing near the back holding a baby girl.
She kept looking at me.
After most people left, she approached.
“This is Patrick’s daughter,” she said quietly. “And she doesn’t have anyone else.”
I thought she had confused me with someone.
Then she handed me an envelope.
Inside was a DNA test with Patrick’s name on it.
There was also a letter.
Patrick explained that, months before we met, he had briefly dated a woman named Lauren. She contacted him years later and told him the baby she had recently given birth to might be his.
The test confirmed it.
Lauren had been seriously ill and died not long before Patrick’s accident.
He had started helping care for the baby but had been terrified to tell me.
The woman at the funeral was Lauren’s sister.
Patrick’s last line read:
“I know I should have told you sooner. If something happens to me, please don’t blame her for my cowardice.”
I sat there for a long time.
I was angry.
Heartbroken.
Confused.
But when the baby grabbed my finger, none of that was her fault.
She had already lost both parents.
I couldn’t change what Patrick had hidden.
But I could decide what happened next.
