My Son Told Me I Wasn’t His Real Dad After a Fight With My Wife — Then She Came Home and Explained Everything

My wife, Rachel, and I had a pretty bad argument last Thursday.

It started over money and turned into a conversation about everything we’d been frustrated with lately.

We went to bed angry.

The next morning, I left for work without saying much.

When I got home that afternoon, our eight-year-old son, Mason, was sitting on the couch crying.

“What’s wrong, buddy?”

He looked at me and said, “Mom told me you’re not my real dad. She said she’s leaving us.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

I’d raised Mason since he was two. His biological father had never been involved, but Mason had always called me Dad.

I tried calling Rachel.

No answer.

Then I noticed a small suitcase beside Mason’s bedroom door.

He’d packed his favorite toys and a photograph of us together.

When Rachel finally came home, I confronted her.

She started crying.

During our argument, she’d told her sister she was considering staying elsewhere for a few days. Mason had overheard her saying I wasn’t his biological father.

He’d put the two things together and thought I was leaving his life.

Rachel admitted she’d handled everything badly.

I knelt beside Mason and told him something I should’ve said years ago.

“I didn’t have to become your dad, buddy. I chose to. And I still choose you.”

He hugged me and wouldn’t let go.

Rachel and I still had problems to work through.

But that night, we agreed our son would never again be left wondering whether he belonged.
