A MIL Kept Opening Her Son’s Mail – So He Left a Sealed Envelope That Made Her Gasp, ‘I Knew Something Was Going On, but I Never Imagined This’

For months, my mother-in-law Diane let herself into our house with a spare key. At first, she rearranged groceries and criticized my spending. Then she started opening our mail.
I caught her reading bank statements, medical letters, and even a card from my massage therapist. My husband, Evan, kept saying, “Mom means well.”
Then my friend spotted Diane talking to a divorce lawyer named Martin. Evan and I weren’t having marriage problems, so we set a trap.
We left a sealed envelope addressed to Evan on the kitchen table. Inside were fake divorce papers.
Diane arrived unannounced, opened the envelope, and immediately looked relieved.
“If this is what you’ve decided, I’ll support you,” she told Evan, barely hiding a smile.
When we revealed the papers were fake, she accused us of humiliating her. But I asked why she’d met Martin.
Finally, she admitted she’d copied our private financial documents and shown them to him. She wanted to know how Evan could protect the house and savings if I ever left.
“You were planning our divorce without us,” Evan said.
Diane insisted she was protecting her son.
Evan demanded her house key and told her to leave.
We changed the locks and bought a secure mailbox. For once, our marriage—and our mail—belonged to us.
And neither of us felt guilty anymore.
