My Brother Left Me His Inheritance—Now My Niece Says I Stole Her Future

I never expected to be seen as the villain in my own family. I’ve always tried to support my niece, especially after her father—my brother—died in a tragic accident when she was three. In his will, he left all of his money to me. It was his choice.

Over the years, I gave her love, guidance, birthday presents, and support whenever I could. I tried to be someone she could rely on, even though I was never her parent.

Now, she’s nineteen and preparing for college. Out of nowhere, she called me, saying, “Send me dad’s money. I need it for college.” She demanded the inheritance, as if I had stolen it. I explained that the money legally belonged to me, that I needed it for my own son’s education, and that I had already supported her in many ways. She hung up immediately.

Since then, she’s been telling friends and family that I am selfishly withholding money that should be hers. I’ve been called heartless, greedy, and cruel.

The money isn’t the worst part—it’s her lack of respect and gratitude. A relationship built on love turned into a transaction overnight.

Sometimes doing what’s right for yourself makes you look like the bad guy. I can live with that. But I can’t help wondering—am I wrong, or are people just choosing sides without thinking?
