My Daughter-in-Law Made Me Pay for Toilet Paper — So I Taught Her a Lesson She’ll Never Forget

Whenever I babysit my grandkids, my daughter-in-law insists that I pay for the toilet paper I use.
“This isn’t a free hotel,” she snapped once — while my son stood there and said nothing.
I smiled, handed her the money, and let it go.
But during their last weekend getaway, I decided to respond in my own way. I ordered pizza for the kids and scheduled a full grocery delivery — snacks, drinks, and everything we could want. By Sunday evening, their fridge and pantry were packed with fresh, high-quality food, all paid for by me.
The look on her face when she opened the refrigerator was unforgettable.
I hadn’t just replaced what we used — I’d stocked their kitchen with premium brands and organic options she usually calls “too expensive.” The kids were thrilled, happily eating their favorite snacks.
My son looked embarrassed but said nothing.
I left every receipt neatly on the counter with a note explaining what I’d spent on “not being a freeloader.” It was more than they typically spend on groceries in a month.
She hasn’t mentioned charging me since.
Still, I’m torn. I love my grandchildren and want to stay close to them — but I don’t want my daughter-in-law’s pettiness to create distance between us.
