The Wife of My Ex Forced My 16YO to Babysit Their Newborn at Night—So I Took Matters Into My Own Hands

My ex-husband and his wife recently had a baby. My 16-year-old daughter lives with them, and last night she called me crying. She said her stepmom had assigned her the “night shift” with the newborn and told her, “You can’t live here for free—you need to earn it.”
I was furious. A teenager shouldn’t be losing sleep to care for a baby that isn’t hers, especially when she has school in the morning. In the heat of the moment, I decided to act.
The next morning, I arranged for Child Protective Services to make a surprise visit to their home.
They spoke with my ex, his wife, and my daughter. In the end, CPS said there wasn’t enough evidence to take further action.
My ex was furious that I involved CPS, but what surprised me most was my daughter’s reaction. She was upset with me too.
Now I feel torn. I still believe it’s unfair for her to be responsible for nighttime baby care, but I’m worried that calling CPS may have made her life more difficult at home.
I don’t regret wanting to protect her, but I can’t shake the feeling that I may have caused more stress than I solved. Now I’m trying to figure out how to stand up for my daughter without creating even more conflict in her life.
