My Mom’s Last Secret

My mom died after a 14-month coma. I was curled up on the hospital floor, completely broken, when one of the nurses gently pulled me into a quiet, dim corner of the hallway.

I expected the usual condolences. The kind words people say when they don’t know what else to offer.

But instead, the nurse looked around to make sure no one else was listening.

“She was awake for about ten minutes before she passed,” she said softly.

My heart stopped.

“For ten minutes?” I whispered. “She woke up?”

The nurse nodded.

“She couldn’t speak much, but she was aware. She squeezed my hand and asked me to promise something.” The nurse hesitated before continuing. “She asked me to keep it a secret… but she also said you deserved to know eventually.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“What did she say?”

The nurse took a breath.

“She told me to tell you not to feel guilty for living your life. She knew you blamed yourself for not being there the moment she woke up. But she said the only thing she wanted for you was peace.”

Tears started running down my face again.

The nurse added one last thing.

“She smiled when she said your name.”

For the first time since losing her, the grief felt a little lighter. Because in those final minutes… she was thinking of me. 💔
