My MIL Dismissed Me in My Own Home, and I’m Stunned By Her Unbelievable Demand

Every time my mother-in-law visits, she calls our house “my son’s home” as if I’m just some guest living there. Never mind the fact that my name is on the deed and I pay half the mortgage. I’ve bitten my tongue for years to keep the peace, but last week she crossed a line I can’t ignore.
We were having dinner when she stood up, raised her wine glass, and smiled proudly. “Here’s to my son, the real owner of this house,” she announced. “Some people just live here.” The table went silent while I sat there stunned.
Then she looked directly at me and added, “That’s why I want my own key—so I can come whenever I want without asking permission.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. She had just insulted me in my own home and expected to be rewarded for it. My husband nervously laughed, clearly uncomfortable, but said nothing.
I stood up, took my glass, and calmly said, “Actually, since this is my house too, let me make something clear: no one gets a key unless both owners agree. And after that comment, the answer is absolutely not.”
Her face turned bright red. She called me disrespectful and stormed out, while my husband later accused me of embarrassing her. I told him if he thinks his mother can insult me, undermine me, and then demand free access to our home, he can go live with her instead.
Now they both say I overreacted—but honestly, I think I finally said what needed to be said.
