My Parents Adopted My Baby and Now Expect Me to Raise Him

I’m 28, and this is something I never thought I’d say out loud.

When I was 17, I got pregnant. The relationship didn’t last, and a few weeks after my son was born, his father disappeared. I was overwhelmed and wanted to place the baby for adoption.

But my parents stepped in. They refused to let a stranger raise their grandchild. Instead, they adopted him themselves. Legally. Completely.

He became my “little brother.”

I moved out, built my life, and stayed in that role. He grew up calling me his sister—and over time, that’s how I saw him too. Not my son. My brother.

My parents did a good job raising him. They really did. But now they’re older, their health is declining, and everything has changed.

Recently, they sat me down and told me they expect me to take him in and raise him.

I said no.

This wasn’t my decision—it was theirs. I already gave up control of my life once, and I don’t want to do it again.

They broke down, called me selfish… and now my whole family is against me.

Then I found something that shook me even more: a folder with emails from families willing to adopt him—labeled “If B. refuses.”

So now I’m stuck between guilt, pressure, and a life I fought to build.

And the hardest part?

I don’t feel what everyone expects me to feel.
