We Thought We Found a Hidden Camera—But the Truth Was Even Stranger

My wife noticed a faint blinking light coming from the smoke detector in our Airbnb late one evening. At first, we tried to ignore it, but something about it didn’t feel right. The light kept flashing at irregular intervals, and the room suddenly felt less like a place to rest and more like somewhere we were being watched.
Trusting our instincts, I grabbed a chair, climbed up, and carefully unscrewed the device. Inside, I saw something that looked unfamiliar—small components and wiring that didn’t resemble what I expected from a basic smoke detector. That was enough for us. We didn’t hesitate. We packed our things quickly, left the apartment, and checked into a hotel nearby.
Still shaken, I wrote a review online, warning others about what we believed could be a hidden camera. I wanted people to be cautious, to trust that uneasy feeling when something seems off.
But just minutes later, the host replied: “You fool, this is a motion detector, not a camera.”
I stared at the message, unsure what to think. Maybe it was innocent. Maybe it wasn’t. But one thing was certain—in situations like that, peace of mind matters more than being right.
