The $45 That Meant More Than a Fortune..

For three years, every morning at 6 a.m., little Marcus knocked on my door before school. His mother worked night shifts, so I packed his lunch, made sure he was ready, and drove him to class. I never expected thanks—I simply wanted him to know someone cared.
Then my life fell apart.
After receiving an eviction notice, I found myself with nowhere to go. In desperation, I turned to Marcus’s mother, hoping for a little kindness after everything I had done.
Instead, she looked at me coldly and said, “I always knew you were too nosy. Honestly, good riddance,” before slamming the door in my face.
I sat in my car for hours, heartbroken and unsure what to do next.
Then came a gentle tap on the window.
Marcus stood there with tears in his eyes, holding a folded piece of paper. It was a crayon drawing of the two of us smiling in front of my apartment under a bright yellow sun.
At the bottom, he had written:
“You are the best person I have ever met. I saved my birthday money. It’s $45. I want you to have it.”
Taped to the picture were two twenty-dollar bills and a five.
I couldn’t accept the money, but I kept the drawing.
Years later, it still reminds me that kindness is never wasted—and sometimes the purest hearts see our worth long before the world does.
