He Demanded I Cover All Our Expenses… Then a Stranger Called and Shattered My Marriage

It all started with a strange request over dinner.
My husband, Jake, and I had always split everything 50/50. So when he casually suggested that I should start paying all the bills while he saved his entire paycheck, I knew something felt off.
He called it “building our future.”
A few days later, I got a phone call that changed everything.
“Hi,” a woman said. “I’m Anna. Jake’s girlfriend.”
My world stopped.
She claimed Jake had promised her a downtown apartment and complained that I was spending all his money. The more she talked, the more the pieces started falling into place. The late nights. The secrecy. The sudden obsession with “saving.”
Instead of confronting him, I played along.
I agreed to pay the bills.
Meanwhile, I quietly transferred my share of our savings, canceled utilities, informed the landlord we wouldn’t renew the lease, and gathered proof of his affair.
When Jake proudly asked about our future plans, I had one surprise left.
I informed him I had found a smaller apartment—for me.
The savings were gone. The lease was ending. And I was leaving.
A few weeks later, I heard that Anna dumped him as soon as she realized there was no fancy apartment waiting for her.
As for me?
I was sitting on my balcony, sipping wine, enjoying something I hadn’t felt in years:
Freedom.
