My Mom Always Controlled My Entire Life, but What She Did to Ruin My Wedding Crossed the Line

When Colin proposed, I thought I was beginning the happiest chapter of my life. But everything changed when my mother was diagnosed with what I believed was a serious illness. I canceled our wedding, quit my job, spent our savings on treatments, and devoted myself to caring for her full-time.
Months later, desperate for another opinion, I took her medical records to a specialist. After reviewing the tests, he looked at me in disbelief.
“There is no illness,” he said. “Your mother isn’t physically sick.”
I was stunned.
When I confronted her, she finally admitted the truth. She had faked her illness because she was terrified I would leave her after getting married. She confessed to manipulating doctors, pretending to take medication, and keeping me by her side through guilt and fear.
In that moment, I realized how much of my life had been controlled by someone I trusted most.
That night, I packed my belongings, called Colin, and told him everything. He simply said, “Come home.”
With therapy, time, and his unwavering support, I slowly rebuilt my life. Colin and I planned a small wedding focused only on our future, not anyone else’s expectations.
I wrote my mother a letter explaining that I loved her but needed distance to heal. Walking down the aisle, I finally understood that love should never demand control or sacrifice your identity.
For the first time, my life truly belonged to me.
