His Cruel Game Ended Before the Night Was Over

I went on a first date with a man who insisted on taking me to a small restaurant across town. The moment we walked in, I noticed the waitress freeze.

He leaned over and smirked.

“That’s my ex-wife.”

Throughout dinner, he treated her terribly. He complained about everything, purposely knocked food onto the floor so she’d have to clean it, and laughed every time she forced a smile. When the bill came, he left a $0 tip.

As we stood to leave, I quietly whispered to her, “I’m so sorry.”

She gave me the calmest smile I’d seen all evening.

“Don’t be,” she said. “In two hours, he’ll understand why I left.”

Confused, I walked outside with him.

Halfway to the parking lot, his phone buzzed.

His face turned pale.

The bank had frozen every account tied to his business after a court ruling he’d ignored for months. His credit cards were declining, his truck was being repossessed, and several clients had officially canceled their contracts.

He exploded in anger, blaming everyone except himself.

I looked back toward the restaurant window.

His ex-wife wasn’t celebrating.

She was simply serving another table, completely unbothered.

That’s when I realized her words had nothing to do with revenge.

She already knew that people who enjoy humiliating others eventually destroy themselves.

I wished him good luck, called a rideshare, and blocked his number before I got home.

The shortest first date of my life taught me the fastest way to judge someone’s character:

Watch how they treat the person they believe has nothing left to offer them.
