My Wife Left Me in a Wheelchair with Our Two Children, Saying She ‘Didn’t Sign Up to Be My Nurse’ – 10 Years Later, She Begged Me for Help

Ten years after abandoning me in a wheelchair with our two young daughters, Katherine appeared at my door asking for money.

Her new husband had left her with debts, and she had nowhere to live. I agreed to help—but first, she had to face the daughters she had left behind.

During dinner, Katherine struggled to connect with Greta and Amelia. She didn’t know their favorite subjects, friends, fears, or routines. She had missed ten birthdays and tried to bridge the distance with small talk.

Afterward, I took out an old storybook called The Adventures of Little Fox. Its margins were filled with notes I had written over the years: first steps, lost teeth, illnesses, school performances, nightmares, and every moment Katherine had missed.

I handed her the book.

“Tonight, you’re reading them their bedtime story,” I said.

Though the girls were now too old for bedtime stories, they had never heard their mother read one.

Katherine’s voice broke as she read the notes. Then the girls asked difficult questions about why she never returned.

For once, Katherine offered no excuses.

Before she left, I gave her enough money for an apartment and groceries. Compassion did not mean pretending her choices were acceptable.

Amelia handed her the storybook.

“So she can finally finish reading it,” Greta said.

Then my daughters chose another book.

“Let’s start a new story.”
