I Learned My Husband Married Me Because I Looked Like His Late Sister

My husband, Daniel, had always been extremely close to his older sister, Claire. She passed away only months after we started dating, and her death devastated him.
I supported him through the grief, and eventually we married. I believed we had built something real.
But after our honeymoon, I woke in the middle of the night and heard Daniel talking quietly with his mother in the living room.
“I don’t think I can do this,” he whispered.
His mother replied sharply, “Be a man and do it. Do it for your sister.”
I stepped closer, confused.
Then Daniel said, “She’s my wife, Mom. She isn’t Claire, and she never will be.”
My stomach dropped.
When I confronted them, the truth came out. Daniel’s mother had encouraged our relationship because I looked remarkably similar to Claire. She had chosen my hairstyle, suggested certain clothes, and even pushed Daniel to propose because she believed having me in the family would somehow replace the daughter she lost.
Daniel admitted he had noticed the resemblance, but insisted he truly loved me and had grown increasingly uncomfortable with his mother’s obsession.
I felt used and deeply betrayed.
We began counseling, and Daniel finally set strict boundaries with his mother. I also changed my appearance—not because I had to, but because I needed to feel like myself again.
Grief had influenced our relationship, but I refused to spend my life living as someone else’s replacement.
