When I agreed to babysit my neighbor Hannah’s four-year-old daughter, I expected games and crayons—not a question that would destroy my marriage.
“Why are you wearing my mommy’s necklace?” Lily asked.
I froze. The gold pendant around my neck was not ordinary jewelry. Ethan’s family traditionally gave one to every woman when she became pregnant for the first time. Each pendant was custom-made and nearly impossible to duplicate.
When Hannah returned, I asked to see her necklace.
It was identical.
“Is Ethan Lily’s father?” I whispered.
Hannah’s silence answered before her words did. She admitted Ethan had fathered Lily while we were dating, then refused to acknowledge her. His mother knew everything and gave Hannah the necklace instead of money, hoping she would remain silent.
That evening, Ethan came home to find his suitcases waiting beside the door.
When I confronted him, he called Lily a “mistake” and insisted the betrayal happened before our marriage. But he had spent years living next door to his daughter, watching Hannah struggle while pretending they were strangers.
