My mother-in-law, Eleanor, invited my nine-year-old daughter and me to what she described as a casual riverside barbecue. She specifically told us to wear old clothes because of the mud and grill smoke.

When we arrived, we discovered a formal birthday dinner inside a luxury restaurant. Everyone wore elegant clothes while Mia stood in paint-stained overalls and I carried a cooler of melting ice.

Eleanor smiled and claimed I had misunderstood her invitation. The original message had conveniently disappeared from my phone.
