What I Found on My Son’s Face Terrified Me

One evening, after putting our children to bed, I finally took a long shower while my wife, Megan, sat in the hallway watching a show on her tablet.
When I turned off the water, I heard our three-year-old son, Oliver, crying for me.
I rushed out and asked Megan why she hadn’t comforted him.
“I went in three times,” she said. “He kept asking for you.”
Inside his dark bedroom, Oliver immediately reached for me. I picked him up and felt something wet against my shoulder.
“I made a mess, Daddy,” he whispered.
Thinking he had spilled water or gotten sick, I wiped his face with a towel.
Then I switched on my phone flashlight.
There was blood around his nose and mouth.
My heart jumped.
We quickly discovered he had climbed out of bed, tripped over a toy truck, and struck his face against the corner of a low dresser. In the darkness, Megan had assumed the moisture on his cheeks was tears.
We took him to urgent care immediately. Thankfully, he needed only a few stitches and had no serious injury.
The scare changed our nighttime routine completely.
We installed a soft night-light, removed hard furniture near the beds, and made sure the floor was clear before bedtime.
That night reminded me how quickly an ordinary parenting moment can become frightening—and why small safety precautions matter most when you least expect to need them.
