My Mother-in-Law Showed Up After Her Son Betrayed Me

When I discovered my husband, Jason, had been having an affair with my closest friend, I felt like two people had betrayed me at once.

Our marriage ended almost immediately.

For nearly two months, I barely functioned. I stopped answering calls, avoided friends, and spent most days wondering how I had missed the signs.

Then one afternoon, someone rang my doorbell.

It was Jason’s mother, Carol.

She was holding a large black suitcase.

I assumed she had come to convince me to forgive him.

Instead, she said, “I’m ashamed of what my son did. And I think you need to see this.”

She opened the suitcase.

Inside were copies of bank statements, receipts, and documents Jason had stored at her house.

Carol had recently discovered that he had been secretly moving money from our joint savings for over a year.

Some of it had paid for hotels, trips, and gifts for my former friend.

But there was more.

Carol also found paperwork showing Jason had planned to empty another account before filing for divorce.

“I couldn’t let him leave you with nothing,” she said.

With those records, my attorney was able to trace the missing money during the divorce.

Jason was furious that his own mother had helped me.

Carol simply told him, “Being my son doesn’t make you right.”

I lost a husband and a best friend that year.

But I also learned that loyalty doesn’t always come from the people you expect.
