My Brother-in-Law Kept Dumping Waste over the Fence Into My Garden – I Taught Him a Lesson He’d Actually Smell Coming

For four months, my brother-in-law Gary had been dumping yard waste over the fence into my garden.
Every time I confronted him, he laughed it off.
“It’s just grass and leaves.”
Then one weekend, I found a huge pile of wet clippings rotting beside my back door. While bagging it up, my shovel hit a plastic tag:
“Golden Celebration Rose.”
Gary didn’t grow roses.
I dug deeper and found branches and plants that clearly weren’t from his yard.
That’s when I discovered Gary had been running a weekend landscaping business. His ads promised customers “full cleanup” and “haul-away included.”
He was charging people to remove their yard waste—then secretly dumping it into my garden to avoid disposal fees.
A few days later, I caught him returning from a job with bags piled in his truck. One of his customers unexpectedly showed up and recognized rose branches already decomposing in my yard.
“You charged me $60 to haul this away,” the man told Gary.
Gary had no excuse.
I returned six bags of rotting waste to the edge of his property.
The customer later posted about it online. Several others recognized their own clippings and demanded refunds.
Gary lost customers and finally had to take everything to the disposal site himself.
He later complained that I should’ve told him I was serious.
“I did,” I said. “Three times.”
After that, nothing ever crossed my fence again.
