The Secret Inside My Ex’s Locket

A year after my breakup with Ryan, I had finally stopped thinking about most of the things he left behind.

One of them was an old silver locket he had given me during our second year together.

I never wore it much, and after we split, I tossed it into a bedroom drawer and forgot about it.

Then one Saturday, my new boyfriend, Caleb, found it while helping me clean.

“This is actually really nice,” he said. “Why don’t you wear it?”

I laughed and told him where it came from.

The clasp was stuck, so we carefully worked it open.

Inside was a tiny folded piece of paper.

My name was written on the outside.

Underneath it was a date.

The strange part was that the date was nearly four months after Ryan and I had broken up.

I unfolded the note.

It wasn’t romantic.

It was an apology.

Ryan had written that he knew he had ruined our relationship by hiding his financial problems and pushing me away. He said he had planned to meet me on that exact date, return some money he owed me, and finally tell me the truth.

But he never showed up.

At the bottom, he had written:

“If I lose my nerve again, at least this will explain why.”

I sat there stunned.

Later, I contacted an old mutual friend.

That was when I learned Ryan had moved across the country suddenly after his father became seriously ill.

The locket had apparently been meant as one last honest conversation.

It never happened.

I didn’t call Ryan.

I didn’t reopen the past.

But I kept the note.

Not because I wanted him back.

Because after all that time, I finally understood why he had disappeared without ever giving me an explanation.
