My husband and I had rented a small mountain cabin for our anniversary weekend.
Everything seemed normal until I noticed a tiny black lens-looking object on a shelf across from the bed.
My stomach dropped.
“Is that a camera?”
My husband inspected it but couldn’t tell what it was.
We didn’t touch it. He simply hung a towel in front of it while I started looking up nearby hotels.
Around two in the morning, the front door suddenly opened.
The owner rushed inside, clearly panicked.
“What did you cover?”
I pointed toward the shelf.
He stared at us.
“That isn’t a camera.”
Then he removed the towel.
The device was actually part of a motion and temperature sensor connected to the cabin’s heating system.
Covering it had caused the system to stop reading the room properly.
But that still didn’t explain why he had entered without permission.
I asked how he even knew we had covered it.
He went quiet.
Then my husband looked toward the ceiling.
A small security camera was mounted above the doorway.
The owner quickly explained that it only monitored the entrance, not the bedroom area.
But the camera’s angle clearly included much more of the room than we had been told.
That was enough for us.
We packed immediately, documented everything, and contacted the rental platform.
The owner insisted there had been a misunderstanding.
Maybe there had.
But a camera inside the sleeping area—disclosed or not—wasn’t something we were willing to debate at two in the morning.
We spent the rest of the night at a hotel.
The anniversary trip was ruined.
But at least we trusted our instincts before ignoring something that made us uncomfortable.
