The Man Who Looked Exactly Like My Husband

When Ethan left for a conference in Denver, nothing seemed unusual.

We had been married eleven years. He packed the same black suitcase he always used, complained about airport coffee, kissed me in the kitchen, and promised to call when he landed.

He never did.

At first, I assumed he was busy.

By the next evening, I was worried. His hotel said no guest by that name had checked in. His company told me the conference had been canceled weeks earlier.

That was when panic set in.

On the fourth morning, my doorbell rang.

A tall man stood on the porch wearing a navy jacket. Same dark eyes. Same crooked smile. Even the small scar above his eyebrow looked familiar.

For one terrifying second, I thought Ethan was playing some horrible joke.

Then the stranger said, “My name is Nathan. Ethan is my brother.”

I laughed because it sounded impossible.

My husband had always told me he was an only child.

Nathan pulled out an old photograph showing two identical boys standing beside the same woman.

Their mother.

He explained that the brothers had been separated after their parents’ divorce as teenagers. They hadn’t spoken in nearly twenty years.

Then came the part that made my stomach drop.

Ethan had contacted Nathan three weeks earlier because their father was dying.

The “business trip” was actually a secret attempt to reconcile with him.

Ethan hadn’t called because the reunion had gone badly. His father died unexpectedly the next morning, and Ethan shut everyone out.

Nathan had finally convinced him to come home.

An hour later, a car stopped outside.

Ethan stepped out, looking exhausted.

I wasn’t angry that he had a brother.

I was angry that after eleven years of marriage, he still believed some pain had to be carried alone.
