The Stranger Who Had My Husband’s Face

When Grant left for a conference in Seattle, nothing seemed unusual.

He kissed me goodbye, reminded me to water the basil plant, and promised to call after his flight.

He never did.

By the second day, his phone went straight to voicemail. His hotel claimed he had never checked in.

On the third night, I barely slept.

The next afternoon, my doorbell rang.

I opened it and nearly dropped my phone.

The man standing there looked almost exactly like Grant.

Same dark eyes. Same crooked smile. Even the same small scar above his eyebrow.

But he was older by a few years.

“My name is Owen,” he said quietly. “Grant is my brother.”

I laughed because the alternative was screaming.

Grant had always told me he was an only child.

Owen handed me a faded photograph showing two teenage boys standing beside an older man.

Then he explained.

Their father had abandoned the family after a financial scandal. Grant had cut ties with everyone, changed his last name, and spent years pretending that part of his life never existed.

But recently, their father had died.

Grant had secretly returned home to settle the estate and had discovered debts tied to both brothers’ names.

“He was ashamed,” Owen said. “He thought if he told you everything, you’d see him differently.”

Then my phone rang.

It was Grant.

His voice cracked when I answered.

“I’m sorry. I should’ve told you years ago.”

I looked at Owen, then at the photograph.

I wasn’t angry that Grant had a brother.

I was angry that after twelve years, a stranger knew more about my husband’s past than I did.
