Why My Daughter Came Back After Years

When my marriage ended, my daughter, Lily, was sixteen.
Her father had cheated, but somehow I became the person she blamed.
She stayed with him after the divorce and slowly cut me out.
At first, I kept trying.
I called on birthdays. I mailed Christmas gifts. I sent messages before exams and left voicemails just to say I loved her.
Most of the time, I heard nothing back.
Eventually, I stopped pushing.
Four years passed.
Then one rainy afternoon, Lily appeared on my porch.
She looked nervous and older than I remembered.
After a few minutes of small talk, she pulled an envelope from her bag.
She had been accepted into a nursing program.
Then came the real reason for the visit.
She needed help with tuition.
I felt angry immediately.
“So after all these years, you came because you need money?”
She started crying.
Then she told me something I hadn’t expected.
Her father had spent years telling her I had abandoned them because I wanted a new life without responsibility.
She had believed him.
Only recently, while helping him move, she found a box full of unopened cards and letters I had sent over the years.
Every one had my handwriting on it.
Every one had been hidden from her.
“I thought you didn’t want me,” she whispered.
I didn’t write her a check that day.
Instead, I made dinner.
We sat at the kitchen table for three hours and talked.
A week later, I agreed to help with part of her tuition.
Not because she asked for money.
Because she finally came back for the truth.
