I was walking my dog, Milo, just before dark when he suddenly stopped beside a thick hedge near the park.
At first, I thought he had caught a scent.
Then he crawled halfway underneath the branches and completely froze.
“Milo, come on.”
Nothing.
I tugged gently on the leash.
He wouldn’t move.
After several minutes, I finally picked him up and carried him away, telling him he was being ridiculous.
But as we reached my apartment entrance, I remembered something.
Milo hadn’t been sniffing the ground.
He had been staring into one specific spot beneath the bush.
I put him inside, grabbed a flashlight, and ran back.
When I pushed the branches apart, I heard a tiny sound.
A kitten was trapped underneath a piece of broken fencing.
It was soaked, trembling, and barely making any noise.
Milo must have heard it long before I did.
I carefully lifted the wire and pulled the kitten free.
A nearby animal clinic was still open, so I rushed it there.
Thankfully, nothing was broken. It was dehydrated and frightened, but otherwise okay.
The clinic scanned for a microchip.
Nothing.
A few days later, no owner had come forward.
So I brought the kitten home.
The moment Milo saw it, his whole body started wagging.
He walked over, sniffed its head, and lay down beside it like this had been his plan all along.
I had spent half the walk calling my dog stubborn.
Turns out, he was simply refusing to leave someone behind.
