The Man My Daughter-in-Law Already Knew

At sixty-two, I honestly thought romance might be behind me.

Then I met Peter.

He was funny, confident, and surprisingly easy to talk to. After a few dates, I found myself looking forward to his calls in a way I hadn’t felt in years.

Eventually, I invited him to spend a weekend with my family.

At first, everything went beautifully.

He helped in the kitchen, joked with my son, and even remembered the old songs I had mentioned liking.

Then, while I was preparing dinner, Peter suddenly disappeared.

I assumed he had stepped outside.

A few minutes later, I heard voices near the hallway.

Peter was talking quietly with my daughter-in-law, Rachel.

“I can’t do this,” he whispered.

I froze.

Rachel grabbed his arm.

“You have to tell her.”

My stomach dropped.

I stepped into the hallway.

They both went silent.

Then Peter admitted the truth.

Years earlier, before Rachel married my son, Peter had been her college professor.

Nothing inappropriate had ever happened, but Rachel knew something about him I didn’t.

Peter had once been engaged to her aunt.

The relationship had ended badly after Peter disappeared days before the wedding because he panicked.

He had never told me.

Rachel recognized him the moment he arrived but didn’t want to embarrass anyone.

Peter said he had been terrified that if I learned about his past, I would assume he hadn’t changed.

I was angry he had hidden it.

But I was more interested in who he was now than who he had been twenty years earlier.

I told him exactly that.

We didn’t break up that weekend.

But from then on, I made one rule very clear:

No more surprises involving people already sitting at my family table.
