The Woman Who Called Him Her Son

A young man named Daniel was shopping after work when he noticed an elderly woman following him through several aisles.
At first, he thought it was coincidence.
Then he stopped near the dairy section.
She stopped too.
By the time they reached checkout, Daniel was starting to feel uncomfortable.
The woman finally approached him.
“I’m sorry if I’ve been staring,” she said. “You look so much like my son.”
Daniel softened immediately.
She explained that her son had died several years earlier and that seeing Daniel had caught her completely off guard.
Then she smiled nervously.
“I know this sounds strange, but when I leave, would you mind saying, ‘Goodbye, Mom’? Just once?”
Daniel hesitated, then agreed.
As she walked toward the exit, he called out, “Goodbye, Mom!”
She turned, smiled, and waved.
A few minutes later, Daniel reached the register.
The cashier scanned his groceries, then added several more bags that were already sitting nearby.
Daniel frowned.
“These aren’t mine.”
The cashier looked confused.
“The woman who just left said her son was paying for them.”
Daniel stared toward the doors.
The woman was gone.
For a second, he couldn’t believe it.
Then the cashier laughed.
“Wait… did you actually call her ‘Mom’?”
Daniel started laughing too.
The extra groceries weren’t expensive, and after hearing the story, the cashier removed them from his bill.
Daniel walked out shaking his head.
He had thought he was doing a grieving stranger one small kindness.
Instead, he had nearly been volunteered to pay for her entire grocery cart.
