A stranger stole my assigned airplane seat and smirked as I walked away from my 10-year-old daughter. She had no idea Lily had already noticed something that would expose her.
I was flying alone with Lily and my five-week-old baby, Noah.
We’d paid extra for two seats together, but when we reached row 12, a woman was already sprawled across Lily’s window seat.
When I showed her our boarding passes, she refused to move.
“You chose to travel with children. That isn’t my problem.”
The flight was full, and the attendant temporarily moved me three rows back with Noah while Lily stayed behind.
Ten minutes after takeoff, Lily suddenly stood.
“Why are you sitting on my mom’s wedding ring?”
My stomach dropped.
I looked at my hand.
My ring was gone.
Lily explained that it had slipped off when I bent down for Noah’s blanket—and she’d seen the woman reach toward it.
The woman lifted herself.

The flight attendant contacted the captain. Other passengers admitted they had also seen the woman pick something up.
