My MIL Humiliated Me With a Too-Small Sweater — Then My Husband Turned It Back on Her

At my mother-in-law’s birthday dinner, she handed me a beautifully wrapped box in front of the whole family.
I smiled, thanked her, and opened it.
Inside was a sweater.
It was nice, but obviously several sizes too small.
Before I could say anything, she smiled and said, “I thought this might motivate you to get in shape.”
The table went completely silent.
I could feel my face burning.
I tried to laugh it off, but honestly, I wanted to disappear.
Then my husband reached over and took the sweater from my hands.
He held it up, looked at his mother, and said, “Wow, Mom. This is actually perfect.”
She looked pleased.

Then he added, “For you.”
Her smile vanished.
He calmly explained that if she thought giving someone clothes that didn’t fit was acceptable, then she probably wouldn’t mind receiving the same treatment.
Nobody said a word.
He handed the sweater back to her.
Then he turned to me and said, “We’ll go pick out something you actually like tomorrow.”
My mother-in-law muttered that it had only been a joke.
My husband replied, “Jokes are supposed to make everyone laugh.”
That ended the conversation.
I didn’t need him to start a fight.
I just needed him to make it clear that humiliating me wasn’t going to be tolerated.
