I Evicted My Dad’s Wife From the House He Left Me — Years Later, She Returned With His Final Letter

When my father died, his will surprised everyone.
He left me the house I had grown up in, while his wife, Carol, received about $10,000 and several personal belongings.
Carol had lived there with him for years, but legally the property was now mine.
At the time, I was struggling financially and couldn’t afford to maintain another house for free.
I told her she could stay if she paid modest rent or move in with her adult son.
She was furious.
“This was my home too,” she said. “Your father would be ashamed of you.”
I still asked her to leave.

After that, we stopped speaking.
Nearly six years passed.
Then Carol called unexpectedly and asked to meet.
When she arrived, she looked nervous and placed an old sealed envelope on my table.
My name was written across it in Dad’s handwriting.
Inside was a letter he had written shortly before his death.
He explained that Carol had privately asked him not to leave the house to her.
She worried her own son, who had serious money problems, would pressure her to sell it.
Dad had left the property to me because he believed I would protect it.
Then came the line that made me feel sick:
“Please make sure Carol always has somewhere safe to live.”
I looked up at her.
She wasn’t there to demand the house back.
She had only wanted me to finally know the truth.
And for the first time, I understood how badly I had misunderstood my father’s final decision.
