I Kept Hearing My Elderly Neighbor Scream — Then I Finally Knocked on Her Door

My neighbor, Margaret, was 78 and had lived alone for as long as I could remember.
She was gentle, quiet, and the kind of woman who always brought cookies over at Christmas.
Then a young man started visiting her several times a week.
At first, I assumed he was a relative or caregiver.
But after a few visits, I began hearing shouting through the wall.
Sometimes Margaret raised her voice too.
I started worrying that someone might be taking advantage of her.
One afternoon, after hearing another loud argument, I walked over and knocked.
The house went completely silent.
A moment later, Margaret opened the door wearing boxing gloves.
I just stared.
Then the young man appeared behind her holding padded training mitts.
Margaret immediately started laughing.
He was her grandson.
After a recent fall, her doctor had suggested exercise to rebuild her strength and confidence. Her grandson had started teaching her basic boxing movements because ordinary workouts bored her.
The “screaming” I kept hearing was him shouting encouragement while she practiced.
Margaret smiled and said, “I told you people would think something terrible was happening.”
I was embarrassed, but relieved.
Before I left, she handed me one of the gloves.
“Come back tomorrow,” she said. “You look like you could use some exercise too.”
And somehow, that became our new weekly routine.
