Man Arrived at His Late Girlfriend’s Sister’s Wedding Wearing a Dress — Her Father Tried to Throw Him Out, but What He Said Stopped Everyone

Five months after losing my daughter Emily to cancer, her boyfriend arrived at her sister’s wedding wearing a lavender bridesmaid dress.

My husband was furious.

“Daniel, what are you doing? Leave!”

But Daniel stood holding a bouquet, his hands shaking.

“Please. I promised Emily.”

Emily was 28 when she died. She and Sophie were inseparable, and she’d helped plan the wedding before getting sick. She’d even picked the lavender dresses.

Daniel reached into his bouquet and pulled out an envelope. I recognized Emily’s handwriting.

He turned to Sophie.

“Your sister knew she wouldn’t be here. She made me promise to take her place as maid of honor.”

Guests laughed nervously.

“She picked the dress herself,” he continued. “She said you’d be so busy missing her that someone needed to make you laugh.”

Sophie opened the letter, crying.

Then she suddenly laughed.

“She says you look like a lavender curtain!”

Daniel laughed too.

But the next line silenced everyone.

“If you’re happy today, Sophie, don’t feel guilty. Every laugh is proof we had something wonderful.”

Sophie hugged Daniel tightly. My husband apologized and embraced him too.

Daniel stood beside Sophie throughout the ceremony, lavender bouquet in hand.

And when he gave her an awkward curtsy at the altar, Sophie laughed like she hadn’t in months.

For a moment, so did we.
