I Went to the Hospital to Care for My Son After He Broke His Leg – Then the Nurse Slipped Me a Note, ‘He’s Lying. Check the Camera at 3 a.m.’

When my ex-husband called to say our 10-year-old son had broken his leg in a “freak scooter accident,” I wanted to believe him.
At the hospital, Howard looked small and shaken in his bright blue cast. Jasper insisted he’d been there the whole time. But something felt off—Howard wouldn’t look at me, and when Jasper reached for him, he flinched.
Later, a charge nurse slipped a note into my hand:
“He’s lying. Check the camera at 3 a.m.”
That night, I went to the security office.
At exactly 3:00 a.m., Jasper walked into Howard’s room—but he wasn’t alone. A woman followed him. As Howard woke up, Jasper calmly coached him on what to say:
“You were riding your scooter. I was outside. You lost your balance. That’s what we tell Mom.”
Howard hesitated. “But Dad… I don’t want to lie.”
That’s when the truth came out—Jasper hadn’t been watching him at all. He’d left our son with his girlfriend, who went inside briefly while Howard tried a trick and got hurt.
Now they were asking him to cover it up.
The hospital documented everything, and a social worker got involved. The weeks that followed were filled with legal meetings and therapy.
A month later, Howard looked up at me and whispered, “I don’t like keeping secrets.”
I squeezed his hand. “You don’t ever have to again.”
