I Refuse to Babysit My Niece in an Emergency, My Vacation Is More Important

My husband and I planned a quiet, romantic getaway for my birthday—just the two of us. I’d been looking forward to it for weeks. But the morning we were leaving, he told me we had to bring his 6-year-old niece because his sister had a hospital emergency.

I was disappointed, but I agreed. I didn’t want to argue, and I felt guilty saying no.

While getting ready, my husband stepped outside for a call. A few minutes later, my mother-in-law called me, casually thanking me for watching my niece so her mom could enjoy a pottery class. I was confused—what pottery class?

That’s when everything fell apart.

There was no emergency. My husband had lied because he knew I wouldn’t agree otherwise.

When I confronted him, he admitted it.

I felt completely blindsided. Not just because my birthday plans were ruined, but because he took away my choice and manipulated the situation.

So I packed my things and went on the trip alone. He could stay and babysit, since that’s what he had planned all along.

I ended up alone in the rental, wondering how things got here—and if I can still trust him after this.
