Laura was on the verge of selling the only thing she had left — her late grandfather’s diner.
After losing her daughter in a tragic accident and then her husband to grief and distance, her life felt like a long list of things gone missing. The diner, once full of warmth and memory, had become another burden she could barely afford to carry.
One cold, quiet night, just as she was preparing to close, an elderly man entered with a tiny dog named Pickles. He asked for the cheapest thing on the menu.
Instead of giving him the bare minimum, Laura made him a real meal — meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, warm bread — and even a little plate for Pickles. The man insisted he didn’t want charity, but Laura told him his company was enough.
They talked for a while, and for the first time in a long time, Laura opened up about her pain.
