I Lost My Daughter Last Year – Five Minutes Before I Walked Down the Aisle, the Coordinator Whispered, ‘Your Daughter Is Here, and She Wants to Speak to You Immediately’

Five minutes before I was supposed to marry Charles, my wedding coordinator pulled me aside.

“Your daughter is waiting near the back entrance. She wants to speak to you alone.”

I nearly dropped my bouquet.

My only daughter, Emily, had died a year earlier.

When I entered the small room, I found a young woman crying.

“My name is Sophie,” she said.

I froze.

Emily had spoken about Sophie for years. They had been best friends in college, but I had never met her.

Then Sophie handed me an envelope.

“Emily gave me this before she died. She made me promise to give it to you on your wedding day.”

Inside was a letter in Emily’s handwriting.

She knew I would feel guilty for moving forward after losing her.

“You loved me every day of my life,” she had written. “You don’t have to prove it by being miserable forever.”

Then Sophie played a video Emily had recorded from the hospital.

My daughter appeared on the screen smiling.

“Mom, don’t make your life smaller because mine was short.”

Then came the words that broke me.

“If Charles is still waiting and you still want him, go marry him. I’ll still be your daughter tomorrow.”

Twenty minutes later, I returned to the ceremony.

Charles quietly said, “We don’t have to do this today.”

I took his hand.

“I know. But I want to.”

And with Emily’s bracelet around my wrist, I walked down the aisle.
