I Kicked My Stepdaughter Out — Her Behavior Was Turning Creepy

My wife passed away from cancer three months ago after we shared 24 wonderful years together. We raised two children who are now in college. She also had a daughter from a previous relationship, Sarah, who became my stepdaughter when she was 16. Despite my efforts, we were never truly close—only polite.

When my wife was diagnosed two years ago, Sarah moved in to help care for her. After my wife passed, however, Sarah never left. She’s now 40, unemployed, and still living in my house.

At first I appreciated the help, but things soon became uncomfortable. She began wearing my late wife’s clothes and acting as if she were replacing her—cooking elaborate meals, ironing my shirts, and trying to take over the household. It felt strange and unsettling.

I spoke with her gently and encouraged her to start rebuilding her own life, but nothing changed. Finally, I told her she needed to move out by the end of the month.

That’s when she broke down crying, saying I was heartless and refusing to let her grieve in her mother’s home. She even said she wanted to stay and “take care of the family just like Mom did.”

Now I feel torn. I want to be compassionate because she is my wife’s daughter. But something about the situation feels wrong, and living together has become deeply uncomfortable.
