The Mango That Ended the Date

I went on a date, and at one point we stopped by a supermarket. I picked up a mango and headed to weigh it. That’s when he frowned and said, “Why? It’s expensive!”
I told him not to worry—I’d pay for it myself.
But he immediately pushed back: “No, you’re with me. I’m the man; I pay. But mangos are expensive—take bananas or peaches instead.”
I just stood there for a second, trying to process what I’d heard.
It wasn’t about the mango.
It was the control, the weird mix of “I’ll pay” and “but only what I approve.” Suddenly, this wasn’t a casual date anymore—it felt like I needed permission to choose a piece of fruit.
Honestly, I almost laughed in his face.
Because if someone is trying to control a mango on the first date… I can only imagine what comes next.
