My 13-Year-Old Daughter Kept Sleeping Over at Her Best Friend’s – Then the Friend’s Mom Texted Me, ‘Jordan Hasn’t Been Here in Weeks’

I thought my 13-year-old daughter was spending weekends at her best friend’s house like she always had. Then one text message changed everything: “Jordan hasn’t been here in weeks.” My stomach dropped instantly.
Jordan had been lying to us for over a month. Instead of sleepovers, she’d been secretly visiting her grandmother — my husband’s mother — the same woman we cut out of our lives years ago after cruel comments, constant judgment, and one final blowup after Jordan was born.
When I confronted my daughter, she broke down crying. Her grandmother had recently moved nearby and told Jordan she was seriously ill. She begged her not to tell us, saying she didn’t want to “ruin things” again. Jordan only wanted to know the grandmother she’d never really had.
I was furious about the lies, but hearing my daughter whisper, “I just wanted a grandma,” broke something in me.
That night, my husband and I drove with Jordan to the tiny apartment where his mother was living alone. She looked older, weaker, and filled with regret. For the first time in years, she apologized — truly apologized.
My husband finally said, “We’ll try.”
Now there are rules. No secrets. No lies. Jordan is still grounded.
But for the first time in her life, she can finally say, “I’m going to Grandma’s,” without hiding where she’s going.
