Conjoined Twins Belle and Abby, From Birth to Separation

When Amy and Jesse Carlsen learned they were expecting twins, they never imagined their daughters would be born conjoined. In December 2005, Belle (Isabelle) and Abby Carlsen entered the world joined at the chest and abdomen, sharing several vital organs and facing serious health challenges.

After months of careful planning, a team of 17 surgeons performed a complex separation surgery on May 12, 2006. The operation successfully separated the twins, and just two weeks later, they returned home as independent children.

As they grew older, Belle and Abby thrived. By age 10, they were active in gymnastics, excelled in school, and were known for their friendly, outgoing personalities. Despite their extraordinary beginning, they remember little about their time as conjoined twins.

Today, Belle and Abby live healthy, independent lives. They wear necklaces engraved with “One in a million” to honor their unique journey. Their story remains an inspiring example of resilience, medical achievement, and the remarkable bond that continues to connect them as sisters.
