How One Employee Finally Found Fairness After Years of Being Overlooked

Every year, I requested a week off at Christmas to visit my family, and every year my boss denied it. This time, I submitted my request in June, yet when the holiday schedule was released, four coworkers were approved while mine was rejected again.

His reason? I should be a “team player” because I didn’t have children.

I didn’t argue. Instead, I quietly moved forward with plans I had already made.

The next day, my boss was stunned to see an announcement on the company’s internal board: I had accepted a new position with another employer and would be starting in January. My new company welcomed me warmly and, more importantly, respected work-life balance and advance planning.

When my boss called me into his office, he asked why I had made such a “sudden” decision. I reminded him that my vacation request had been sitting in his inbox for six months and that this wasn’t about one holiday—it was about a pattern of unfair treatment.

For years, I had filled scheduling gaps while others enjoyed time with their families. Eventually, I realized my time mattered too.

This Christmas, I’ll finally be home with the people I love. And I’ve learned an important lesson: valuing yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.
