The Washing Machine Repair Guy Gave Me A Note—But It Wasn’t About Me At All

It started with something completely ordinary: my washing machine began leaking. I called a repair service, and a young technician named Ruben arrived, fixed the problem, and prepared to leave. Just before walking out the door, he handed me a small folded note that read: “Please call me. It’s about someone you know.”

Curiosity got the better of me, and the next day I called.

What he told me changed everything.

“Do you know someone named Felix?” he asked. Felix was my ex-husband, a man I hadn’t spoken to in seven years. Then Ruben revealed the truth: Felix was his father and had recently passed away.

The next day, Ruben gave me a letter Felix had left behind. In it, he apologized for the way our marriage ended, shared memories he had never forgotten, and wrote about discovering he had a son late in life. He also asked one thing of me: if Ruben ever found me, to be kind to him.

Over the following months, Ruben and I grew close. What began as a chance encounter became an unexpected friendship that felt like family. Through old letters, paintings, and shared memories, I learned that Felix had carried pieces of our past with him until the end.

A leaking washing machine brought a stranger to my door. What it really repaired, however, was a part of my heart I thought had been lost forever.
