A Surprising Meeting That Taught Me About Love and Letting Go

I never expected to spend a flight sitting next to my husband’s ex-wife.
At first, the situation felt awkward. She recognized me immediately and introduced herself with a warm smile.
As we talked, she casually mentioned that the house my husband and I shared had once been their dream home. The blueprints, paint colors, and kitchen layout had all been planned during their marriage. I was stunned—Oscar had never told me any of that.
Trying to hide my discomfort, I replied, “We’ve made changes. It’s our home now.”
She smiled knowingly.
Then she mentioned something else: Oscar still sent her flowers every year.
That revelation hit even harder. Not because I felt jealous, but because I didn’t understand why. The more she spoke, however, the more I realized it wasn’t about romance. It was simply a habit left over from a chapter of life they had already closed.
Before we landed, she looked at me and said, “I’m not trying to upset you. Oscar is a good man. He just holds onto things longer than he should.”
Then she added, “You’re the person he chose for his future.”
Her honesty surprised me.
As we left the plane, I understood something important: every relationship has a past. What matters isn’t pretending it never existed—it’s choosing each other in the present and continuing to move forward together.
