My Best Friend and Island Romance Secretly Planned to Steal My Novel

At 55, my life felt completely broken. My marriage had ended, my family had drifted apart, and the only thing keeping me hopeful was the novel I had spent years writing.

My closest friend, Lana, convinced me to take an island vacation.

“You need a fresh start,” she said.

That was where I met Eric. He was younger, intelligent, attentive, and incredibly charming. I knew the age difference was significant, but after years of loneliness, I allowed myself to enjoy one unforgettable evening with him.

The next morning, Eric was gone.

So was my laptop—the one containing the only complete copy of my manuscript.

Panicked, I ran toward Lana’s room. Before knocking, I heard Eric’s voice inside.

“She has no idea,” he said. “Everything is going perfectly.”

Lana replied, “Once we sell the manuscript, she’ll never prove it was hers.”

My heart shattered. The vacation, Eric’s attention, and Lana’s friendship had all been part of a plan.

I quietly recorded their conversation on my phone, then contacted hotel security and the police. My laptop was recovered from Eric’s suitcase before they could leave.

The recording exposed everything. Lana had secretly read my novel months earlier and believed it could make millions.

Both were arrested for theft and attempted fraud.

I returned home alone—but not defeated. Months later, my novel was published under my own name.

The two people who tried to steal my story only gave me its final chapter.
