When my ten-year-old son, Howard, broke his leg while staying with my ex-husband, Jasper claimed it was a freak scooter accident that happened while he was watching.
At the hospital, however, Howard seemed frightened and avoided eye contact. When Jasper reached toward him, he flinched. A concerned charge nurse quietly slipped me a note: “He’s lying. Check the camera at 3 a.m.”
That night, I entered the security room and watched the recording. Jasper arrived with a woman named Kelly, his secret girlfriend. They pressured Howard to repeat a false story.
The truth was that Jasper had left Howard alone with Kelly while he went out. Kelly briefly went inside, and Howard attempted a scooter trick without supervision. After he was injured, Jasper coached him to lie so I would not discover the girlfriend or his absence.
The hospital saved the footage, notified a social worker, and documented Jasper’s behavior. When I confronted him, he minimized what happened and refused to take responsibility.
Legal proceedings followed, and Howard began therapy to understand why he felt responsible for protecting his father. Kelly quickly disappeared once the situation became serious.
