I was twenty-one when I decided to propose to my girlfriend, Natalie.
We had been together for almost three years, and I truly believed we were building a future.
I didn’t have much money, but I worked extra shifts for months to buy a simple ring I could actually afford.
I proposed during a family dinner.
The second Natalie saw the ring, her expression changed.
“That’s it?” she said loudly. “Is this really what you think I’m worth?”
Everyone went silent.

I put the ring back in the box, thanked her parents for dinner, and left.
Natalie never called to apologize.

Robert had discovered everything after she asked him for money.
