What Was Hidden in His Carry-On

After twenty-three years of marriage, I thought I knew my husband, David, better than anyone.
But over the past few months, he had changed.
He stayed late at work, kept his phone face-down, and forgot plans he normally would have remembered.
I started fearing the obvious.
So for our anniversary, I booked a surprise weekend in the Caribbean.
I packed everything, including his clothes.
On the morning of the flight, David almost didn’t come.
“I’ve been buried at work,” he said. “I don’t know if I can get away.”
I felt crushed.
At the last second, he arrived at the gate and boarded with me.
During the flight, I eventually fell asleep.
A flight attendant gently touched my shoulder.
“Ma’am, your husband stepped toward the back. Before he returns, there’s something you may want to look at.”
She pointed toward his carry-on.
Confused, I opened it.
Inside was a folder, several photographs, and a small velvet box.
The photos weren’t of another woman.
They were of our children, our first apartment, our wedding, and places we had traveled over the years.
Then I found a letter.
David had been secretly working extra hours because he wanted to surprise me by paying off the remaining mortgage before our anniversary.
The velvet box held a new wedding band.
When he returned, he saw the open bag and froze.
I started crying.
“So this is what you’ve been hiding?”
He smiled awkwardly.
“I wanted to ask you to marry me again.”
For months, I had mistaken secrecy for betrayal.
The truth was that he had been quietly planning a new beginning with the same woman he had chosen decades earlier.
